Restoring the Railway

The cost of a central line

This report issued in October 2022 and jointly funded by the Welsh Senedd and UK Government, indicated that the costs of restoring the line for railway use would be £150m (or £100m for “light” rail).

The type of funding needed and the lack of any credible economic viability for a new line means we will not be able to have a railway like we once did.

North Wales Transport Commission

The recent North Wales Transport Commission report by Lord Burns recommends that reopening Anglesey Central Railway isn’t the most effective use of public funds!

It also recommends that consideration be given to active travel along the route by developing walking and cycling routes along them, with high quality bus services for the communities alongside them, thus safeguarding the route of the former line.

Remembering and Honouring the Railway

A multi-user path allows us to recognise the history of the old long gone railway. Historical and heritage recognition is part of what Lôn Las Môn is. Users of the pathway will be able to engage with and learn about the history of the railway and the wider aspects of history, heritage and culture of Anglesey and how it has influenced the world beyond the island.

Lôn Las Môn hope that through collaboration with the community and rail organisations, the old private line into the Associated Octel site could be developed into a shared facility. This will provide an extension of the multi-use path alongside a heritage railway offering.
